Water Damage Is Real: Full Gutter Replacement in Vancouver, Washington
Challenge
When the homeowner contacted us, they were concerned about the condition of the wood on the outside of their home. During our inspection, we found that the gutters were completely clogged with leaves and debris, which prevented rainwater from flowing through the system properly. Instead of draining away from the home, the water was overflowing the gutters and constantly soaking the fascia, soffit, and exposed support beam.
Over time, the repeated moisture caused the end of the support beam to begin rotting. The wood had noticeable cracks, splitting, and signs of deterioration, showing that it had been exposed to water for a long period of time. If the problem had not been addressed, the damage could have spread to other parts of the home's exterior, resulting in more costly repairs.
Simply replacing the damaged wood would not have solved the problem. The source of the moisture needed to be fixed to prevent the damage from happening again. By addressing the clogged gutters and improving the home's water management system, we were able to help protect the home's exterior and prevent future moisture-related damage.
Solution
After completing a thorough inspection, our roofing consultant , Jason, determined that the root cause of the damage was poor water management. The existing gutters were clogged and no longer directing rainwater away from the home, allowing water to overflow and repeatedly saturate the surrounding wood.
To solve the problem, Jason recommended replacing the aging gutter system with new gutters to restore proper drainage and protect the home's exterior from future water damage. In addition, our team installed full-perimeter F-8 drip edge flashing beneath the first layer of roofing. This flashing helps guide rainwater directly into the gutters instead of allowing it to run behind the fascia, reducing the risk of moisture intrusion and wood rot.
By addressing both the roof edge and the gutter system, we eliminated the source of the moisture problem rather than simply repairing the visible damage. The homeowner now has a complete water management system that helps protect the roof, fascia, soffits, and structural wood from future deterioration.
